The Foundation partners with the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) to fund new science into both the causes of lupus, and into the best therapies to treat lupus patients. The Foundation is taking prudent risks in pursuing innovation. We strongly believe that funding original and novel research increases the likelihood of achieving our goal more quickly.
Lupus Research Institute
Recognizing that most major medical breakthroughs come from unexpected directions, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation works closely with the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) to support innovative ideas to prevent, treat, and cure lupus.
The LRI is the only organization exclusively funding novel lupus research, casting a broad net to identify and support scientists with the brightest new ideas that have the potential to unlock the mysteries of lupus. Since its inception in 2000, the LRI has awarded dozens of grants for novel research in lupus across the nation, and is now considered the source of the largest number and widest range of privately funded research investigations in lupus.
This bold to cracking the code of lupus is now showing remarkable advances—and the proof lies in the number of scientists who have expanded their work through government grants.
Because of the LRI, novel lupus research is moving forward—and quickly. Its $50 million investment in scientists with bold new ideas has quadrupled generating over $150 million in new grant funding from the NIH and other sources.
