Theory on Why Sun Triggers Lupus Immune System

Immunologists and dermatologists at the University Hospital Bonn in Germany discovered how an immune mechanism triggers lupus skin lesions reports an article in ScienceDaily. "We have shown how the UV component of sunlight may cause DNA damage in cells, and in consequence lead to an alarm response from the innate immune system," notes investigator Dr. Winfried Barchet.  The study is published online in the academic journal Immunity.
