Despite Disease, Newington Athlete Supports Her Team
Sidelined from her beloved sport, high schooler winning fight against lupus
During the first week of high school as a freshman defender, Erin Luciano was diagnosed with systemic lupus in her kidneys and forced to give up soccer. But the diagnosis threatened much more than the love of her favorite sport. The disease, which claimed her grandmother at the age of 44, required Luciano to endure kidney biopsies, seven months of chemotherapy and nine medications twice a day for more than six months.
