Time to Focus: Lupus and Your Kidneys 
Writer Flannery O'Connor Lupus kidney disease took the life of one of the American South's literary treasures in 1964. She would have turned 81 this month. During Kidney Awareness Month particularly, the Foundation remembers O'Connor and the tens of thousands of others who have dealt with this potentially fatal complication of lupus.

Brooklyn the First Stop in Five-City Education Program on Twin Threat of Lupus and Heart Disease The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s national research partner, the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), kicked off its five-city “Lupus and Cardiovascular Disease” Continuing Medical Education (CME) series in early March at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. More than 85 members of the New York medical community participated in the program, which was presented with the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc (ABC). It was the first in an educational series that aims to alert and educate physicians of the significant dangers of cardiovascular disease in people with systemic lupus—particularly young women and African American women, for whom heart disease is not normally considered a risk.
A program was also held in San
Francisco (March 15), and is scheduled
for Chicago
(March 28), Los Angeles (March 31)
and Detroit (April 25). Sessions will
be presented by local cardiology and
rheumatology specialists.
