Third Lupus Outreach Center Opens Its Doors in Brooklyn
State Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns, Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham and distinguished members of the Brooklyn community will join the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation at the June 15th opening ceremony for the new Lupus Cooperative of New York (LCNY) outreach center at Long Island University. The first of its kind in the city's largest borough, the bilingual center will collaborate with existing organizations--from community boards to hospitals, church groups to housing councils--to form a grassroots, culturally appropriate and easy-to-navigate referral and support network for people with lupus. + Read more about the Brooklyn Cooperative launch »
When the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation first opened
the doors of its Lupus Cooperative in East
Harlem in 1998, people in the inner city with
lupus had few if any places to go for help.
The Foundation's solution was to develop a
bilingual "Lupus Cooperative" to spread
awareness of lupus, speed diagnosis, connect
people to doctors, and get emotional and
financial support to those who needed them.
Since then, the Cooperatives have reached out
to more than 30,000 people and provided
direct services to nearly 1,100 people
affected by lupus in New York City.

New Website Broadcasts Urgent Need for Lupus Clinical Trials
The Foundation is partnering with other members of the Lupus Research Institute National Coalition to launch www.LupusTrials.org, the official website for the new clinical trials campaign, "Lupus Together: For Clinical Trials Today." The patient-friendly site is part of a year-long national initiative to educate the more than 1.5 million Americans with lupus about the importance of participating in lupus clinical trials, and how to go about enrolling in one. The timing is critical, as promising new research findings spur drug developers to contemplate clinical research in lupus for the first time in decades. Visit LupusTrials.org today! »
This summer, the Foundation will be adding two new monthly support groups for young adults at its Manhattan headquarters: a group for 19- to 25-year-olds and a group for 25- to 40-year-olds. If you are interested in joining, please email lupus@lupusny.org or call 212-685-4118. The Foundation's general support group will continue on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information on support groups around New York City, visit our website.
